Dear all,

Last night, I see the TV news reporting that a New
supercomputer was developed (by IBM?) runinng Linux. It is named like
"???sea" . I cannot find the information in Web. Can u suggest me

I'm not sure what machine you mean, but it's probably...

Blue Gene is IBM's product name for their latest supercomputer. The
latest LINPACK number for the biggest Blue Gene/L system thus far is
280.6 teraflops, the fastest system in the world by a wide margin.

Blue Gene:

IBM's current system uses nodes with dual PowerPC 440 CPUs. The next
system (Blue Gene/C) will use IBM's SIMD Cell processor as the CPU.

The Cell CPU:

ASCI (Advanced Simulation and Computing Initiative) is the Defense
department designation for the research/funding source that underwrote
much of Blue Gene's development.

ASCI (Advanced Simulation and Computing Initiative) is the Defense
ASCI is DOE, not DOD.

That should give you a hint.

The DOD has a separate HPC modernization program.

The Blue Gene or other ASC systems is NOT what the person was after.
I think the original poster meant the "mare Nostrum" machine/system. The
best details can be found at:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/library/pa-nl3-marenostrum.html

hope that helps!

"mare nostrum" == "our sea" (in spanish)
